Design your own unique full moon ceremony that you can tailor to your needs every month.

Getting into a rhythm of holding a little lunar ceremony every month can help you in so many ways. It’ll strengthen your spirituality, get you more in tune with the natural cycles, help you be healthier, more resilient and emotionally stronger than ever before.

Once you have the basic foundation, you can have a beautiful ceremony every full moon with very little effort! Make it as complicated or as minimalistic as your heart desires, change things up from moon to moon, but always be in tune.

Basic Components

The basic components of your ceremony are:

  1. Do a bit of prep work a few days before to decide your intention (energy working).
  2. Set the scene.
  3. Smudge.
  4. Light the candle.
  5. Do your chosen energy working.
  6. Close off.

Types of Energy Workings For a Full Moon

In general, whenever you do energy work, you want your message to the Universe to be as clear and simple as possible. Always try to avoid mixing messages. For example, sending away and bringing in during the same energy working.

On a full moon, there are different kinds of energy work you can do during your ceremony. Here’s a look at some of the main themes.

RELEASING

Letting go of that which no longer serves. Forgiving (yourself, and others). Clearing away and cleansing. Breaking bad habits. Banishing. Cord cutting. Mirror back spells (sending bad energy back to the sender like unopened mail).

These are all about releasing something, letting go and moving on. You are using the culmination of the moon’s build up to it’s fullest moment, all that energy in its completion, to shift and end something of your choosing.

REVEALING

Shining a light on what needs to be seen. Lighting a new path forwards. Divination and psychic work. Seeking truth.

These all revolve around revealing energy. You are directing the full moon energy like a spot beam to light up a dark corner you’re probing.

AMPLIFYING

Full moon energy is big energy – it’s the final stage of a month of building up. In this sense, you can do any sort of energy working and use the full moon energy to amp up the power of your working.

You are harnessing the full moon energy and channeling it into your working.

Before The Full Moon

In the days leading up to the full moon, take some time to sit down with a pen and paper. Think about how your values and needs have shifted over the last cycle, what is important to you now, and what you need to let go of.

The full moon energy represents the end of a cycle, the culmination of the lunar energy built up throughout the month. Be open and aware of what is coming forward and appearing for you, and what is falling away, or needs to be released to make space for the new.

If you’re not sure about what your intention should be for the ceremony, try asking yourself these questions and see what comes up.

  • What is no longer serving my higher purpose?
  • Where does my life feel out of alignment?
  • What ideas, inspiration or creativity have popped up that have made me feel excited?
  • What’s really important to me now? What do I value versus what have I been starting to let go of?
  • When I am with my “people” (close circle) what do we talk about? Is the overall vibe about manifesting a better world, are we focused on love? Or does it generally revolve around “us vs them” rhetoric, fear, anger, conflict, and other ‘old world energy’?
  • What makes me feel happy? How can I do more of this?
  • What am I constantly trying to avoid? Why? What can I do about it?
Prep before the full moon

Crystals For The Full Moon

GENERAL FULL MOON CRYSTAL KIT

As a “general” full moon crystal kit I recommend 3 types of crystals. You can have as many of these as you like, or just one. I suggest working with a crystal or crystals that are strongly aligned with the moon’s energy, a crystal or crystals for grounding and protection, and a crystal or crystals for loving and supportive energy.

1. Selenite, Moonstone, Lunar Quartz or Labradorite for helping you tune into, harness and make the most of the moon energy.

2. Grounding and shielding/protective crystals such as earthy Jaspers, Mookaite, Hematite or black Tourmaline.

3. Heart chakra crystals to wrap yourself in love and support, like Rose Quartz, pink Andean Opal, Amazonite or Kunzite.

CRYSTALS FOR YOUR ENERGY WORKING

In addition to the main 3 types of crystals I suggest working with on a full moon, or making part of your ceremony, you might also want to bring in a crystal or crystals related to your chosen energy working.

For releasing workings, I recommend:

RELEASE WORKINGS: Black Kyanite, Rainbow Obsidian, Orange Calcite or Topaz. Each of these crystals can help you cut ties, let go, release and move on.

For energy workings revolving around answering a question or questions, and delving into the depths, I recommend:

REVEALING WORKINGS: Any crystals aligned with the third eye chakra. Labradorite, Amethyst, Lapis Lazuli and Indigo Gabbro for example will all help you channel and reveal using the full moon’s light.

On The Full Moon

Now that you’ve done your prep work, you know what energy working you want to do as part of your full moon ceremony.

  1. SET THE SCENE
  2. SMUDGE
  3. LIGHT THE CANDLE
  4. DO YOUR CHOSEN WORKING
  5. CLOSE OFF

SET THE SCENE

Put your phone on airplane mode and sit down in a space free of distractions.

You might want to put on some relaxing instrumental music.

Gather everything you need for your ceremony:

  • You full moon candle (any candle you choose) and a lighter
  • Smudge stick, palo santo or smudging incense and bowl
  • Pen and paper to write down anything that comes up for you
  • Your Moon incense in an incense holder
  • Crystals for the full moon energy
  • Anything you need for your energy working

SMUDGE

Cleanse everything you’ve gathered for the ceremony, the space and yourself. If for any reason you can’t smudge, you can also use a singing bowl to clear away energy. You want everything in the space to be fresh and clear for this ceremony.

LIGHT THE CANDLE

Light your moon candle. Sit and watch the flame for a minute and you slow your breath and tune in to the moment. You might like to ask your spirit guides, guardian angels and ancestors to be with you and help you with your working.

Smudge yourself and space

“In the light and energy of this Full Moon, I am surrounded by my team. My spirit guides, guardians and ancestors are with me, protecting me, guiding me, supporting me. My roots grow down deep into Mother Earth, I am wrapped around her crystal jewels buried deep in her burrows.”

DO YOUR CHOSEN ENERGY WORKING

Here you will be letting something go, looking for information or using the moon’s full energy to boost any other kind of working.

It can be as simple as stating your intention out loud and thinking about it for a few moments. Or you can do a deep meditation in the space, do a tarot or oracle card reading, or a complex ritual of your planning.

If you aren’t sure what to do, you can just do a short meditation on what came up for you during your prep work.

You can also go through the questions in the prep work again, and see what comes up for you now. You can use the moon’s energy to help you shift things, as you work through them.

CLOSE OFF

To close off your ceremony, give thanks to your guardians, angels and ancestors for their support and protection. Thank yourself for making the time to show up for yourself! You did good! Thank the Universe for the opportunity to have agency in your own life. And affirm that you are worthy of living a joyful life full of abundance.

Put out your candle. Give everything a smudge to release any energy left from your working and smudge yourself again too.

Done! Go drink a big glass of water to hydrate and help your body flush out anything that has been released.
