Crystal Feature: Fluorite

Welcome to the wonderful world of colourful Fluorite! Read on to see some serious eye candy and learn more about collecting and working with this popular crystal.

Introduction

Fluorite and Tourmaline are probably two of the most popular mineral species to collect, and that’s largely because they occur in such a wide range of colours and forms. Fluorite especially is experiencing a surge in collector popularity lately. Let’s take a look at this beautiful mineral.

What Is Fluorite?

Fluorite is the mineral form of calcium fluoride, and belongs to the halide group of minerals.

Fluorite is often fluorescent under UV light. In fact, it was one of the first fluorescent minerals to be studied in 1852. The word ‘fluorescent’ comes from Fluorite!

Fluorite Formations

You can find Fluorite in different habits, including octahedrons, cubic clusters and massive (meaning no visible crystals formed).

Colours

Fluorite occurs in a wide range of colours, with blue and bright yellow probably being tied for the most coveted. Red, purple, green, pink and black crystal specimens are also found. All of these colours are due to different trace minerals being present when the Fluorite forms.

Without any other trace minerals in the mix, Fluorite is clear and transparent. In fact, optically clear Fluorite is used in microscopes and telescopes, thanks to its low dispersion properties.

The rarest colour of Fluorite is somewhat of a debate. Some people say red, others say clear.

Collecting

Collecting this mineral is super fun and addictive! There are so many colours and colour combinations to get started with. Then you can look at famous localities to collect from.  When you are building a crystal collection of any kind, remember that locality is very important. Where the crystal specimen is from adds greatly to its worth later on. So always look for and hold onto this information when purchasing new stones for your collection.
