Stunning large Chrysoprase standing freeform with expertly polished lovely finish. Cut base for standing. This beautiful Chrysoprase comes from Madagascar, and is very difficult to obtain. GEOLOGICAL

Chalcedony is a microcrystalline form of Quartz. Scientifically it’s not its own distinct mineral species but defined separately from Quartz by appearance. Within the Chalcedony family are various crystal groups including Agate, Jasper and so on, also defined separately by their appearance (for example, Agate is Chalcedony that has bands/stripes, while Jasper is the name given to solid opaque Chalcedony).

Generally, only translucent, one-colour material in this large group is sold under the name ‘Chalcedony’. Different colours of Chalcedony occur due to the occurrence of different mineral inclusions.

 

Chrysoprase is a sought after green variety of Chalcedony, getting its unique colouring from the presence of nickel. Varying amounts of nickel in the chalcedony cause a beautiful array of colours from pale yellow to dark green in interesting patterns. Due to the beautiful colouring and patterns, Chrysoprase is considered to be the most valuable gemstone in the chalcedony family.

‘Chrysoprase’ comes from the Greek ‘Chrys’ (meaning gold or yellow) and ‘Prase’ (meaning green). It was favoured among the ancient Greeks, Romans and Egyptians in jewellery and ornamentation, referred to as “the stone of Venus”.
