Fluorite, Watermelon Rough Piece 7cm

Fantastic bottle green with blue and purple areas. Mostly gemmy, translucent to semi – translucent. With occasional intrusive quartz exposures showing on the pieces.

Multicolour Fluorite material like this is often called ‘Watermelon’ Fluorite. Nice big rough chunk with good colour! From Uis, Namibia. Very Good to A Grade. Size approx 7cm. Weight approx 146g.

GEOLOGICAL:

Fluorite is the mineral form of calcium fluoride, and belongs to the halide minerals. It can occur in natural octahedron and complex isometric forms, though it crystallizes in a cubic habit. Also known as Fluor Spar, it can occur in many different colours.

Optically clear, transparent Fluorite is used in microscopes and telescopes, due to low dispersion properties. Fluorite is often fluorescent under UV light. In fact, it was one of the first fluorescent minerals to be studied in 1852, and the word ‘fluorescent’ was named after Fluorite.
