Geological Properties
As always, let’s start our journey into the world of Star Quartz by learning about it’s formation process and composition.
Hollandite is a rare metallic oxide mineral and a barium-manganese member of the Coronadite group. It was first found in the Kajlidongri mine in India, and named after the director of the Geological Survey of India, Sir Thomas Henry Holland.

It begins when tiny drops or deposits of the mineral Hollandite become trapped within Quartz as the Quartz is forming and growing. When the Quartz is subjected to high thermal temperatures within the Earth, the heat causes the Hollandite to expand and burst.
It explodes like a tiny black star, with radiating acicular needles stretching out into the Quartz surrounding it. The exploding star is captured forever, encased in its Quartz matrix.

Collecting Hollandite Star Quartz
Hollandite itself is a rare mineral, and the unique Quartz formation is thus very rare. Making it a great collector’s item! We have been lucky to get some specimens of this formation into the shop from a pocket discovered recently in Madagascar. It definitely doesn’t come up very often!
Good quality Hollandite Star Quartz will have multiple visible black stars, with the Quartz being translucent enough to show the stars clearly. Ideally the Quartz should be undamaged and asthetically pleasing to improve the value of the piece.
