Geological Properties of Blacknite Quartz
This is exciting new material, and will be highly collectable. Blacknite Quartz is a newly discovered Quartz with variable amounts of a black surface patina. The patina consists of rare minerals Bornite and Covellite in Ferro-Hematite.
So if you’d prefer a more “geological” name tag for this specimen rather than the trade name ‘Blacknite’, it’d be something like: “Clear Quartz with Ferro-Hematite exclusions associated with Bornite and Covellite”
The Quartz itself consists of mainly small to medium size crystal points in complex clusters, with optic or near-optic clarity. Coating the clusters is a primarily gun-metal silver to black metallic alloy. What makes this a really exciting find is that occasionally within this coating are areas of a 100% natural rainbow iridescence! Bright metallic blue, pink and yellow hues can be seen.
The irridescence is due to the presence of two rare minerals, Bornite and Covellite.
BORNITE
Bornite is a copper and iron-bearing sulfide that is often mixed up with Chalcopyrite. Freshly exposed, Bornite is a reddish-copper colour. Within a few days, it tarnishes to pinkish grey through to iridescent purples, reds and/or blues. With prolonged exposure to air and moisture, it will eventually tarnish to black (unlike Chalcopyrite). Learn more about Bornite on Geology.com
COVELLITE
Covellite is a rare sub-metallic copper sulfide mineral. It forms in thin platy hexagonal crystals and rosettes very rarely, while more commonly presenting as massive to granular. It occurs as a dark indigo blue, often iridescent with purple, dark red and brass-yellow flashes.
Collecting Blacknite Quartz
This is, to date, a once-off find. What that means is that a pocket of this material was found, and is currently being excavated. We don’t (and can’t) know how much there is available (i.e. how deep the pocket goes, whether they’ll find more like it). Right now, it’s a super rare and interesting find!
The specimens are on a very sandy, somewhat unstable matrix. You may even find one or two of the points in a cluster are a little bit loose and can be wiggled slightly. While this is definitely undesirable in a collector’s piece and you wouldn’t ordinarily find us selling clusters like this… This is a “take it or leave it” scenario, what with this pocket being the only discovery of this combo formation in the world (to date). But as long as you don’t fiddle with it too much, it’s really not an issue. So please remember to handle your specimens with a bit of extra care.
