Beautiful blue Peruvian Angelite nodule with polished face to bring out the colour. From Mexico. Medium to Good Grade. Size approx 4cm.

 

GEOLOGICAL

From the Greek anhydros, meaning “waterless”, Anhydrite was named by A.G. Werner, a well-known German geologist, in 1804. This translucent, blue-gray Anhydrite variety was found in Peru in the late 1900’s and is known by the trade name “Angelite” or “Angeline”. Fairly rare, Anhydrite doesn’t occur in abundance, as it alters into the much more commonly found Gypsum when exposed to water over time.

 

GEOLOGICAL

Anhydrite is a beautiful, highly sought after and incredibly rare mineral. It generally occurs as clear, blue, purple or grey long bladed or short crystals in matrix. Anhydrite is a dehydrated form of Gypsum, hence its name from the Greek ‘an’ (without) and ‘hydor’ (water). Fascinatingly, it can revert to Gypsum when water is reintroduced, which is why this mineral is scarce.

The blue variant was discovered in Peru in 1987 and has been given the tradename ‘Angelite’. The purple variant has been found in Madagascar, often in association with Chrome Diopside (itself fairly rare) and peach to orange Calcite.
