Extra small rough pieces of Iolite, also known as Cordierite or Water Sapphire. These rough pieces are approximately 0.5cm – 1.5cm in size and weigh between 1-5g each. You will receive one piece.

GEOLOGICAL

Cordierite is an iron-rich silicate mineral. It’s named after Pierre Cordier, a French geologist who first studied the species in 1813. It occurs in a wide range of colours, including grey, blue, violet, green, yellow-brown to colourless. The most desirable and collectable is blue, usually called Iolite (which is Greek for ‘violet’).

Cordierite can display strong pleochroism (has different colours when observed at different angles, especially with polarized light). It has been called ‘Water Sapphire’ and ‘Viking’s Compass’ due to the legend that Vikings used slices of the stone reduce glare and determine the direction of the sun on overcast days.
