GEOLOGICAL

Stilbite is the name of a group of minerals in the Zeolite family. A hydrothermal mineral, it’s often found in basalt cavities. Stilbite occurs in a range of colours including white to cream; pink; yellow through to red and brown; and pink. It gets its name from the Greek “stilbein” (‘to shine’) or “stilbe” (‘mirror’) referring to its beautiful pearly lustre.

This is one of those minerals that’s had more names than you can count. It started off as Zeolite in 1756 (Axel Cronstedt), then Stilbite in 1797 by Jean Claude de la Métherie. Between then and now, it’s also been documented as Zeolite Nacrée; Strehliger Zeolith; Stilbite Anamorphique; Desmine; Sphaerostilbite; Blättricher Zeolit; Hypostilbite; Puflerite; Radiated Zeolite; and Syhedrite.

It typically forms in thin tabular, sheaf-like or globular botryoidal clusters. Stilbite sometimes fluoresces pale yellow or blue-white in shortwave UV.

 

Apophyllite is the name for a group of minerals that vary chemically. But it is rarely sub-classified, generally labelled and collected simply under the group’s name. You typically find this mineral in volcanic zeolite environments as well as traprock quarries. Its name is from the Greek ‘apo’ – to be off, and ‘phyllos’ – leaf, referring to how Apophyllite flakes when heated.
