What Are Mala Beads?
Mala beads (aka yoga beads or japamalas) are rooted in Hinduism and Buddhism, created some 3,000 years ago in India. The mala bead necklace is meant to help you focus your mind during meditation or yoga practice, and enhance your spiritual practise in general.
The necklace traditionally has 108 beads, with one bead being the largest. This largest bead in the centre is known as the guru. It is said to hold the energy generated during your practice.
Usually the necklace is made using overhead knotting, which makes the necklace stronger and provides a space, “japa”, during the counting beads meditation. Counting the beads is an ancient mindfulness meditation with deep reaching benefits in your life. You can incorporate it into your regular meditation and or yoga sessions, and even use the beads to assist in mitigating anxiety, stress or concentration issues.
