Amazing Quartz with green Fuchsite polished standing freeform. The Fuchsite shows variable shimmer and occasional Pyrite specular inclusions. The specular Pyrite inclusions make it something special in natural light! Very pretty with a polished finish. From Madagascar. Good to A Grade. Size approx 9cm. Weight approx 236g.

 

GEOLOGICAL

Micas are a group of sheet silicates that form in distinct layers, called a phyllosilicate. The most common varieties of Mica include Muscovite (colourless to green, blue or brown), Lepidolite (pink to purple) and Biotite (black). The group’s defining feature is its ability to split into thin elastic sheets (perfect cleavage). Micas do not absorb heat or transfer electricity, making them useful thermal and electric insulators. Micas occurring as large crystals are often called books; these may measure up to several metres across!

 

Fuchsite, also known as Chrome Mica or Green Muscovite, is a chromium-rich variety of the mineral Muscovite, belonging to the Mica group. It was named in 1842 by Karl von Schafhäutl in honour of Johann von Fuchs, a professor of chemistry and mineralogy, and curator of the mineral collection.

Fuchsite is mostly found as light green, however the higher the chromium content, the richer the green colour that results. It generally occurs as flakes or plates that share Mica’s reflective qualities, and is very soft – only 2-2.5 on the Mohs scale. Fuchsite can fluoresce under long wave UV light.
