These red Tiger’s Eye tumbled stones are a rich deep red with good chatoyancy. This is heated material. Some matrix and minor Hematite inclusions variably present. Good to A Grade.

 

GEOLOGICAL

Tiger’s Eye is a pseudomorph of compact Chalcedony Quartz after the fibrous mineral Crocidolite. It is formed when the Quartz takes over and dissolves the Crocidolite, leaving the Quartz in a finely fibrous and chatoyant form. When it is cut, broken or polished with its fibrous structure parallel to the bottom of the stone, a ‘chatoyance’ or cats-eye effect is visible when the stone is turned in the light.

When Crocidolite (which is naturally blue) is dissolved by Quartz, traces of Iron Oxide remain. Less Iron results in the blue colour of Crocidolite being dominant, thus blue Tiger’s Eye. If more Iron is present, the colour tends to result in the brown to gold colour of gold Tiger’s Eye.

Red Tiger’s Eye, also known as Ox’s Eye or Dragon’s Eye, is Tiger’s Eye with red hues. While this mineral can form naturally through oxidation, it is very rare. Most Red Tiger’s Eye on the market, like these, have been heat-treated to give it a reddish appearance.
