Lovely material with very cool dendritic moss-like patterns. Moss Agate is a Dendritic Agate. The density of the dendrites ranges from sparse to almost solid in the matrix. The material is mostly translucent, creating a spectacular 3D effect in areas. Stunning! Good to A Grade.

 

Geological

Agate is the multicoloured banded variety and the most well-known form of Chalcedony. The different colour bands or layers are produced as liquids of different compositions seep into cavities over geologically long time periods. They form layers of Chalcedony on top of each other.

Dendritic Agate, also known as Moss Agate, is a translucent Chalcedony with green or brown inclusions (less commonly yellow, red or black) called ‘dendrites’. Often misinterpreted as plant fossil, the dendrites form when water rich in variously Manganese, Chrome and/or Iron, flow along tiny cracks between layers and within the crystal matrix. The oxide then crystallizes in this organic, branching tree or moss like pattern.

Similar to Tree Agate (Merlinite) in appearance, the main difference is that Tree Agate is solid/opaque with moss patterns, whereas Moss Agate is usually translucent, so the “moss” appears in 3D.
