Very nice uncommon material, similar to “K2” Afghanite. Blue Spinel in matrix with excellent polish. From Madagascar. Good to A Grade. Size approx 6cm. Weight approx 314g.

GEOLOGICAL

Spinel is the magnesium / aluminium member of the larger spinel group of minerals. Its name comes from the Latin word spinella, which means spike or little thorn (referencing its formation of acicular needle – like crystals). Spinel occurs in many different colours, including red, green, blue, brown, violet, orange, black & clear.

Blue Spinel gets its colour from Cobalt impurities in the crystal lattice. Blue Spinel is extremely rare, and in gem form it commands some of the highest prices among Spinel stones.

Many royal families have Spinels within their national Crown Jewels, most coming directly from a few ancient mines in Tajikistan. The Crown Jewels of the United Kingdom have two very famous Spinels in their collection, known as the “Black Prince’s Ruby” (dating back to 1367) and the “Timur Ruby”. The Iranian Crown Jewels have the largest single Spinel gem ever discovered, known as the “Sumerian Spinel” weighing over 100g!
