Blue Black Tourmalinated Quartz 6cm.

Stunning natural blue to black Tourmaline in a snow white Quartz matrix. One side has been polished while the rest has been left natural and rough. Very cool! Tourmalinated Quartz doesn’t come up too frequently here, especially with the rare blue tones. Great, affordable material! From Namibia. Good Grade. Weight approx 91g. Size approx 6cm.

 

GEOLOGICAL

Tourmaline is the name for a group of crystalline boron silicate minerals first identified in the 1800s. Its name comes from mid-18th century French. Tourmaline has some awesome properties! It becomes electrically charged when heated (this is called pyroelectric). It is also piezoelectric (meaning it creates electricity under pressure).

Tourmaline occurs in more colours and colour combinations than any other gemstone in the world. The different colours have many different causes. In general, it is said that trace amounts of iron and/or titanium create green and blue hues. Blue Tourmaline is called Indicolite. While Black Tourmaline is called Schorl.

Quartzite is also known as Snow Quartz or Milk Quartz due to its white colour. It is a metamorphic rock, originally consisting of Quartz-rich sandstone or chert which was exposed to heat and pressure usually related to tectonic compression.

Tourmalinated Quartz, or Tourmalated Quartz is the term for Tourmaline rods occuring in a Quartz matrix.
