Polished opaque white Scolecite with dark intrusive veins of likely Basalt. Good to A Grade. Size approx 2cm. Weight approx 19g.

 

GEOLOGICAL

Scolecite is a hydrous calcium aluminium silicate belonging to the Zeolite family. Its name is from the Greek ‘skolex’, meaning ‘worm’, relating to its reaction to the blowpipe test. Scolecite is a brittle, translucent mineral that appears silky when fibrous, and is usually found in acicular radial formations.

It occurs in clear, white and pink, while rarely red or green hues. Additionally, Scolecite is both pyroelectric and piezoelectric. This means that it can create electricity when heated or placed under pressure.
