Rare combination of small red Rubies in a brecciated green Verdite, polished freeform. The Ruby fluoresces under UV light! Excellent oddity for collectors both great and small! This UV-reactive material comes from a limited deposit in Zimbabwe. Very Good to A Grade. Size approx 6cm. Weight approx 99g.

 

GEOLOGICAL

Ruby:

Corundum is a crystalline form of aluminium oxide typically containing traces of iron, titanium, vanadium, chromium or magnesium. It is a rock-forming mineral. Usually translucent, the presence of trace minerals creates different colours.

Corundum is a very hard mineral – 9 on the Mohs hardness scale – meaning it can scratch almost all other minerals. It’s commonly used in abrasives and sandpaper. Black granular Corundum is known as Emery. If you’ve ever heard a nailfile being called an ’emery board’ – you now know why! Corundum also forms two world famous gem varieties – Sapphire and Ruby.

Ruby is the gemmy pink to red variety of Corundum. Its colour comes from trace amounts of Chromium replacing the Aluminium content in the mineral. The higher the Chromium present, the redder the hue. Very pink Corundum is often called pink Sapphire rather than red Ruby by the jewellery industry.

 

Verdite:

Fuchsite is a green variety of Muscovite Mica. It gets its colour from the presence of Chromium. Mostly Fuchsite occurs as tiny grains scattered through rock mass, but occasionally you can find rock almost completely composed of Fuchsite. These green Fuchsite-rich rocks are called Verdite. Generally the Mica grains orientate with the flat faces perpendicular to the direction of compression, resulting in little sparkle being visible in the rock.

Verdite is also sometimes called ‘African Jade’ (while similar in colour, its not related to the Jade family) and Buddstone or Budstone.
