These black Moonstone gallets are gorgeous high quality material, hand polished into a palmstone gallet. Characteristic brown veins in dark grey to black hues, with lovely silvery shiller play of light. From Madagascar. A Grade. Size approx 4-5cm. Weight approx 85g.

 

GEOLOGICAL

Hecatolite, tradename Moonstone, is an Orthoclase member of the Feldspar group. It gets its name for the ‘lunar’ glow sometimes present, a soft and watery opalescence that seems to float just under the surface. This sheen made the ancient Romans believe that the moon’s beams were frozen in the stone. The scientific cause is somewhat less romantic – light diffraction within the microstructure of Feldspar layers.

 

Black Moonstone is a unique variety of Feldspar. Its distinct feature is its dark colouration, featuring grey, brown to black hues. It has the characteristic chatoyancy of Moonstones. It’s found in small quantities in various parts of the world. Madagascar and India (particularly the state of Orissa) are both renowned for pockets of some of the highest quality Black Moonstone material available.
