Stunning polished Malachite and Chrysocolla (nicknamed ‘Malacolla’) freeform with rich vibrant colours and lovely patterns. We absolutely love this mineral combo – the colours are outstanding. From DR Congo. Very Good to A Grade. Size approx 6.5cm. Weight approx 79g.

 

GEOLOGICAL

Chrysocolla has a cyan (blue-green) colour. It is a hydrous copper silicate that’s usually found with Malachite and Azurite. A secondary mineral, Chrysocolla forms in the oxidation zones of copper ore bodies. It’s the copper that gives this mineral its beautiful turquoise colour. Chrysocolla was first mentioned in 315 BC by Theophrastus, Greek Peripatetic philosopher and pupil of Aristotle.

Malachite is a green copper carbonate hydroxide mineral. It was one of the first ores used to produce copper metal, and was cited as early as 79CE by Pliny the Elder, who referred to the mineral as ‘Molochitus’. In 1661 the spelling was revised to ‘Malachite’ as it is known today.
