Stunning polished Malachite and Chrysocolla (nicknamed ‘Malacolla’) specimen with rich vibrant colour and lovely patterns. Very Good to A Grade. Weight approx 100g. Size approx 5.5cm.

 

GEOLOGICAL

Chrysocolla has a cyan (blue-green) colour. It is a hydrous copper silicate often found with Malachite and Azurite. A secondary mineral, Chrysocolla forms in the oxidation zones of copper ore bodies. It’s the copper that gives this mineral its beautiful turquoise colour. Chrysocolla was first mentioned in 315 BC by Theophrastus, Greek Peripatetic philosopher and pupil of Aristotle.

Malachite is a green copper carbonate hydroxide mineral. It was one of the first ores used to produce copper metal, and was cited as early as 79CE by Pliny the Elder, who referred to the mineral as ‘Molochitus’. In 1661 the spelling was revised to ‘Malachite’ as it is known today.

 

Malacolla is a tradename for specimens of Malachite and Chrysocolla occuring together.
