GEOLOGICAL

Chalcedony is a broad term describing microcrystalline forms of Silica.

Jasper is any type of Chalcedony which is opaque (ie solid, not translucent, light doesn’t pass through the material). Jasper has many different known varieties. It can be a single colour, multicoloured, spotted, striped or speckled. It is pigmented by mineral inclusions, mostly iron oxides. Learn more about Jasper in our Crystal Feature HERE.

Orbicular Jasper is Jasper with colourful circular or ‘orb’ patterns. Orbicular Jaspers form in highly silicified Rhyolite or Tuff. Quartz and Feldspar in the material crystallize in radial or needle-like forms, creating the base or ‘seed’ for the orb shapes.

Ocean Jasper (and Atlantis Jasper) is a tradename for a specific type of Orbicular Jasper that was only found in one area off the coast of Madagascar. It was first discovered in 1922, but the location was lost soon after, for over 75 years. The deposit was only visible and reachable by boat during low tide.

When it initially arrived on the market around 2000, the colours and circular patterns were extremely vivid, however, later material was less colourful and had more banded patterning. The mining of the depleted deposit stopped in 2006. Older material from the original deposit is thus rare and valuable.
