GEOLOGICAL

Carnelian is a variety of the silica mineral Chalcedony. It is variously brown, orange, amber-red to red in colour, and translucent. It’s colour is derived from the inclusion of iron oxide in the Chalcedony matrix. Sometimes Carnelian has banded patterns which means it can be classified both Carnelian and Agate. Carnelian has been used in history as far back as early Neolithic times! It was named from the Medieval Latin ‘cornum’, referring to the Cornel cherry, whose translucent red fruits resemble the stone.
