MAGNESITE VS HOWLITE?

*We used to sell this veined white Magnesite material as Howlite (as it was sold to us). We then learned that this material is actually Magnesite. Howlite was originally sourced from Tick Canyon, USA. When the supply ran out, suppliers replaced it with the Magnesite material in Southern Africa but continued to sell it as Howlite.

The two materials look almost identical, except that Howlite has darker and more prominent veining. Both are soft, porous, and often dyed for use in jewellery. They are, however, two different minerals with different chemical compositions. Howlite is a calcium borosilicate, while Magnesite is a magnesium carbonate.

To our knowledge, there is no supply of Howlite, and products sold as Howlite in South Africa are in fact Magnesite. But people only know the name “Howlite” so it persists.

 

GEOLOGICAL

Magnesite is a magnesium carbonate mineral and is named after the Magnesium in its composition. This mineral has been detected on Mars! The Magnesite in the Southern African area forms as massive lenses in Serpentine deposits. It is found as massive lapidary-grade material at multiple sites, including Zimbabwe, Botswana, and South Africa. The grey veining is caused by the presence of Chalcedony.
