Awesome Calcite material consisting of banded layers in white, grey, black and occasional yellow to orange hues. Natural rough pieces. From Mexico. Very Good to A Grade.

 

GEOLOGICAL

Calcite is a carbonate mineral and the most stable polymorph of calcium carbonate. It is colourless or white when pure. Calcite is best recognised by its relatively low Mohs hardness (3) and its high reactivity with even weak acids, such as vinegar. Natural rough Calcite feels smooth and ‘waxy’ to the touch.

Zebra Calcite is a recent discovery coming out of Mexico consisting of strikingly unique banded material with colours in layers of white, grey, black and yellow material.

The different colours in Calcite are the result of different minerals being present as layers were deposited over a long geological time frame. Manganese is thought to produce the grey to black hues, while Limonite is likely responsible for the yellow tones.
