Mostly opaque bright yellow blades of rare Wulfenite crystals on and in a Quartzite matrix. From Kaokoveld Region, Namibia. Size approx 6.5cm. Weight approx 81g.

 

GEOLOGICAL

Wulfenite was first named in 1772 as “plumbum spatosum flavo-rubrum”. It was renamed “Kärntherischer bleispath” in 1781. Luckily, after many more name change proposals, it finally got the title “Wulfenite” in 1845, in honour of Franz von Wulfen. Von Wulfen authored a monograph on the lead ores of Bleiberg, Austria where this mineral was first discovered.

Wulfenite is a secondary mineral that occurs in oxidised hydrothermal lead deposits. It occurs in beautiful bright orange-red to honey yellow hues, highly prized amongst collectors. As well as shades of grey, olive green, brown and sometimes even black. Wulfenite commonly forms thin, tabular crystals.
