Complex cluster of black Tourmaline with Mercedes formations, in association with sparkling white Orthoclase. From Namibia. Good to Very Good Grade. Size approx 8.5cm. Weight approx 95.5g.

 

GEOLOGICAL

Tourmaline is the name for a group of crystalline boron silicate minerals first identified in the 1800s. Its name comes from mid-18th century French. Tourmaline has some awesome properties! It becomes electrically charged when heated (this is called pyroelectric). It is also piezoelectric (meaning it creates electricity under pressure).

Tourmaline occurs in more colours and colour combinations than any other gemstone in the world. The different colours have many different causes.

Orthoclase is a Potassium Aluminium Silicate and a variety of Feldspar. It often forms short prismatic and tabular crystals with a high percentage of twinning and occasional striations. It can also be found in massive and granular forms. Colours range from clear to white, sometimes with green, pink or yellow dusky pastel tinges.
