By far one of the most desirable and collectible colours of Tourmaline on the market. Watermelon Tourmaline is characterised by a pink centre with green exterior.

This material is not gemmy but rather opaque/milky in colour, in matrix clusters. Some have a degree of lithium mica blue colouration in the matrix. Matrix is white to Smoky Quartz. Fantastic large-sized specimen-grade material for collectors! You don’t need to be a millionaire to own one of these! From Mozambique. Good Grade. Size approx 10.5cm. Weight approx 493g.

 

GEOLOGICAL

Tourmaline is the name for a group of crystalline boron silicate minerals first identified in the 1800s. Its name comes from mid-18th century French. Tourmaline has some awesome properties! It becomes electrically charged when heated (this is called pyroelectric). It is also piezoelectric (meaning it creates electricity under pressure).

Tourmaline occurs in more colours and colour combinations than any other gemstone in the world. The different colours have many different causes. Watermelon Tourmaline is a variety of Tourmaline (primarily Elbaite, Fluor-Elbaite, and/or Liddicoatite) with colour zoning showing a pink core and green rim, just like the fruit.
