Tourmaline, Pink Rubellite with Quartz XL 11cm 724g

Large to Extra Large Pink Tourmaline (Rubellite) in Quartz specimen.

This large to extra large specimen stands well, a large section of white Quartz topped proudly by a huge pink Tourmaline rod, surrounded by a ring of blue colouring. Very cool collector’s piece! Good to Very Good Grade. Weight approx 724g. Size approx 11cm.

The recently discovered deposit of Rubellite (pink Tourmaline) from Karibib, Namibia is non-gemmy crystals with a rich pink colour in a white Quartz matrix associated to purple vermiculite and schist. A percentage of specimens also have a blue colouration in the matrix (possibly Indicolite – blue Tourmaline) but this would require testing.

 

GEOLOGICAL

Tourmaline is the name for a group of crystalline boron silicate minerals first identified in the 1800s. Its name comes from mid-18th century French. Tourmaline has some awesome properties! It becomes electrically charged when heated (this is called pyroelectric). It is also piezoelectric (meaning it creates electricity under pressure).

Tourmaline occurs in more colours and colour combinations than any other gemstone in the world. The different colours have many different causes. Manganese can create reds, pinks and yellows, while some pink and yellow Tourmalines might be due to colour centres caused by radiation.
