Silky Sugilite on Manganese and Sugilite matrix. From the highly collectable locality, Wessells Mine. Size approx 6cm. Weight approx 21.5g.

 

GEOLOGICAL

In South Africa, Sugilite formed in deep beds of manganese-rich metamorphic rocks that are the remains of magma. These deposits in the Kalahari manganese fields of the Northern Cape Province are the largest and richest manganese deposits in the world.

Sugilite was officially classified as a rare gem in 1980. High demand for Sugilite in China exhausted stock from most mineral dealers and prices continue to rise with very little availability.

In 2013, a small new find at the famous Wessels Mine produced well-crystallized specimens. This new material characteristically has masses of hair-like fibrous crystals in thin veins. Bright lavender to purple with a silky sheen. These fibrous crystals are the rarest form of crystallized Sugilite.
