Silky lavender purple Stichtite with green to orange-brown Serpentine. This combo is also known as Atlantisite. The Serpentine tends towards semi-crystalline gemmy exposures. Great large size for display! We are super lucky to have a supplier who found a local deposit – Stichtite is usually rare and hard to get hold of, mostly coming from Australia. From Barberton, South Africa. Very Good to A Grade. Size approx 15cm. Weight approx 361g.

 

GEOLOGICAL

Stichtite is a magnesium chromium carbonate and considered a rare mineral. It is an alteration product of Chromite containing Serpentine. Discovered in 1910 on the west coast of Tasmania. And named for the manager of a nearby copper mine, Robert Sticht.

It occurs in hues ranging from pink through lilac to a rich purple. When in association with green Serpentine, it is called Tasmanite or Atlantisite.

 

Serpentine is not the name of a single mineral but a group of minerals that share similar physical properties and form by similar processes. In general, they occur in varying combinations of Magnesium, Iron, Nickel, Aluminium, Zinc or Manganese, with Silicon, Aluminum or Iron.

It forms due to the alteration of basic and ultrabasic rocks. Serpentine is usually opaque, sometimes translucent, in massive formation and has a waxy feel. It occurs in various shades of green, but can be yellow, black, white, and other colours.
