GEOLOGICAL

Shattuckite is a rare copper silicate mineral that is highly regarded for its vivid blue colour. It was named in 1915 after the Shattuck Mine in Bisbee, Arizona where it was discovered. It can occur as granular massive form and also as fibrous acicular crystals.

 

Dioptase is a translucent to transparent emerald green crystal. Named in 1797 by Hauy from the Greek for “through” and “to see”, referring to the mineral’s two cleavage directions visible inside unbroken crystals. Dioptase occurs in the oxidized zone of copper deposits. When heated, Dioptase generates an electric charge (called pyroelectric).

A hydrous copper silicate, it forms micro-crystals usually less than 75mm in size. While not rare, good specimens are highly collectable. Dioptase was used in Pre-Pottery Neolithic statues dating back to 7200BC!
