Pink Tourmaline in Quartz 9cm

Fantastic rough piece of a long, opaque pink Tourmaline rod in a lovely white Quartz matrix. Some minor pink-purple Lepidolite mica in association.

From Karibib, Namibia. Very Good Grade. Size approx 9cm. Weight approx 400g.

A percentage of specimens from this relatively recently discovered deposit have hints of blue hues in areas which is suggestive of Indicolite – blue Tourmaline. This would require lab testing to confirm. 

 

GEOLOGICAL

Tourmaline is the name for a group of crystalline boron silicate minerals first identified in the 1800s. Its name comes from mid-18th century French. Tourmaline has some awesome properties! It becomes electrically charged when heated (this is called pyroelectric). It is also piezoelectric (meaning it creates electricity under pressure).

Tourmaline occurs in more colours and colour combinations than any other gemstone in the world. The different colours have many different causes. Manganese can create reds, pinks and yellows, while some pink and yellow Tourmalines might be due to colour centres caused by radiation.
