Gorgeous gemmy translucent Olmiite with excellent lustre and well defined crystals. Peachy tan hue. Lovely rare collector’s item. From N`Chwaning II, Northern Cape, South Africa. Size approx 2.5cm. Weight approx 4g.

GEOLOGICAL:

Olmiite, a calcium-manganese silicate, is a rare and relatively newly discovered (2006) mineral only found in one area – the Kalahari Manganese Field of South Africa. Its colour can range from light tan to dark pink.

It can be found in a range of habits, including radiating spheres, botryoidal, acicular and (least commonly) pyramidal, among others. Olmiite’s unusual name (with two ‘ii’s) is from Filippo Olmi, who first identified the mineral.
