GEOLOGICAL
Chalcedony is a microcrystalline form of Quartz. Scientifically it’s not its own distinct mineral species but defined separately from Quartz by appearance. Within the Chalcedony family are various crystal groups including Agate, Jasper and so on, also defined separately by their appearance (for example, Agate is Chalcedony that has bands/stripes, while Jasper is the name given to solid opaque Chalcedony).
Generally, only translucent, one-colour material in this large group is sold under the name ‘Chalcedony’. Different colours of Chalcedony occur due to the occurrence of different mineral inclusions. Blue Chalcedony is a result of Cr2O3-MgO (Chromium Oxide / Magnesium Oxide).
Chrome Chalcedony is similar in appearance to Chrysoprase. However, while Chrysoprase gets its green colour from Nickel, Chrome Chalcedony gets its colour from Chromium.
Chrome Chalcedony is rare and highly collectable. Its been found to have been used in jewellery and seals during the Roman Empire before disappearing from use around the 2nd century. It was only rediscovered when a Zimbabwean deposit was found in the 1950s.
Today, it’s sourced from Zimbabwe (with the trade name Mtorolite) and Bolivia (with the trade name Chiquitanita).
