Molybdenite Crystals in Matrix 5.5cm

A hard-to-find mineral specimen consisting of individual formed Molybdenite crystals in matrix. Good to A Grade. Size approx 5.5cm. Weight approx 124g.

 

GEOLOGICAL

Molybdenite is a rare mineral, consisting of the metal Molybdenum and Sulfur. It can be confused with Graphite, since they’re both soft (1 to 1.5 on the Mohs Hardness Scale) and grey to silver in hue. They can also both occur as hexagonal crystals or foliated masses. Although Molybdenite generally has a higher lustre and is soluble in acid, while Graphite is not.

Another similarity between Molybdenite and Graphite is that they both have layered atomic structures, with planes of extreme weakness. In Molybdenites’ case, this property gives the mineral a slippery feel and makes it a valuable lubricant. Its currently being researched as a possible replacement Silicon in transistors in electronic chips.
