Small rare Silky Malachite thumbnail specimen in fan-like crystal formation. Stunning green colour intensity and variable chatoyancy. From Kasompe, Congo. Very Good to A Grade. Size approx 3cm. Weight approx 10g.

 

GEOLOGICAL

Malachite is a green copper carbonate hydroxide mineral. It was one of the first ores used to produce copper metal, and was cited as early as 79CE by Pliny the Elder, who referred to the mineral as ‘Molochitus’. In 1661 the spelling was revised to ‘Malachite’ as it is known today.

Collectable specimens of Malachite have various categories and characteristics, including colour, chatoyancy and habit. Botryoidal material is the most commonly available formation, while silky Malachite is far harder to get hold of, and lastly Stalactite/Stalagmite specimens are the most rare and collectable.
