GEOLOGICAL

Magnetite is an iron ore mineral. It’s one of the most magnetic natural minerals on earth. It is attracted to a magnet and can be magnetically charged to become a permanent magnet itself.

Originally called Lodestone as early as 1548, it was renamed in 1845 by Wilhelm Karl von Haidinger for the locality at Magnesia, Greece. Pieces of lodestone suspended on a string formed the world’s first magnetic compasses, used in China as early as 300 BC.
