Libyan Desert Glass

Fantastic large AA Grade specimen with lovely golden yellow colour and excellent translucency. Colour, translucency and shape are all factors in grading specimens. From Sahara Desert. Size approx 3cm. Weight approx 8g.

GEOLOGICAL

Libyan Desert Glass is an impactite, meaning it formed during a meteor impact some 29 million years ago. It is found in areas in the eastern Sahara, the deserts of eastern Libya and western Egypt. Geologists are still searching for the impact site of the meteorite, but there is clear evidence that it happened (Mindat, “Kleinmann et al., 2001”).

Libyan Desert Gkass is almost pure molten silica glass, Lechatelierite. Scientists call it “the hottest naturally occurring silica”. To form, it survived temperatures above 1,600 °C – hotter than any igneous rock on Earth. It also contains traces of Cristobalite, a rarely occurring high-temperature mineral. And grains of the mineral Zircon, mostly reacted to form a higher-temperature mineral called Zirconia.
