GEOLOGICAL

Inesite is a rare Calcium Manganese Silicate. Its name stems from the Greek Ίνες (ines) in reference to its fibrous habit, coined by Adolf Schneider in 1887. It occurs in colour hues ranging from browns to ginger oranges to reds and pinks. Inesite forms in various habits including fan-shaped clusters, fibrous to acicular, massive, botryoidal, and chisel-shaped terminated crystals no larger than 2cm.

The Kalahari Manganese Field of South Africa, at both the Wessels Mine in Hotazel and the N’Chwaning Mines in Kuruman, are considered noteworthy localities that produced some exceptional specimens a decade ago, now highly sought after by collectors.

Calcite is a calcium carbonate mineral. It is colourless or white when pure but is found in a rainbow of different colours depending on trace elements present. Calcite is identified by its low Mohs hardness (3) and its high reactivity with even weak acids, such as vinegar.
