Hausmannite Sturmanite Specimen 8cm

Combo specimen of two uncommon minerals. Consisting of a plate of metallic grey-black Hausmannite with some nice drusy areas in association with tan Sturmanite. From KMF, South Africa. Size approx 8cm. Weight approx 85g.

 

GEOLOGICAL

Hausmannite is a complex oxide of Manganese. It generally forms black granular aggregates or, relatively rare, pseudo-octahedral crystals. Ranging from opaque brown to black, Hausmannite can be resinous, dull or sub-metallic.

Originally discovered and named in 1813 by a German mineralogist, Johann Friedrich Ludwig Hausmann. He called the mineral “blättricher Schwarz-Braunstein”. Luckily for us, Wilhelm Haidinger renamed it Haumannite in his honour in 1827.
