Bright red Andradite Garnet with rare black acicular Gaudefroyite crystals in matrix. From Wessels Mine, Northern Cape, South Africa. Size approx 4.5cm. Weight approx 21g.

 

GEOLOGICAL

GAUDEFROYITE

Gaudefroyite is a rare mineral only found in the Kalahari Manganese Fields of Southern Africa. It gets its name in honour of Christophe-Léon Gaudefroy – French ecclesiastic and mineralogist – after being identified in 1964. It belongs to the Borates group of minerals. Gaudefroyite is typically black, with a glassy to dull lustre.

 

ANDRADITE GARNET

Andradite Garnet is one of the most sought-after species in the Garnet group, and gem-quality crystals are rare. Andradites have a very high lustre, with a higher dispersion (sparkle) than diamonds! Not always visible in dark colours, but light colours show a dazzling fire.

You can find Andradites in many colours, including red, orange, yellow, brown, black and even green. Very rarely, Andradites can display a strong rainbow iridescence, sometimes called ‘Rainbow Garnet’.
