Tiny blocky yellow Ettringite inside a natural cubic transparent Selenite. Good to A Grade. From N`Chwaning II, Northern Cape, South Africa. Size approx 5cm. Weight approx 17g.

 

GEOLOGICAL

ETTRINGITE

Ettringite is a colourless to yellow Calcium Aluminium Sulphate. It can partially dissolve in water, while dehydration can turn it white. Ettringite can form radiating acicular, fibrous, and striated prismatic crystals. Its name comes from the Ettringer Volcano in Ettringen, Germany, where it was first described in 1874 by J. Lehmann.

Interestingly, Ettringite forms during the process of mixing cement. Scientists are currently investigating how Ettringite can help isolate toxic heavy metals and prevent them from leaching into the soil and environment.

SELENITE

Selenite is the name of the transparent, mostly colourless variety of Gypsum. While the white, fibrous Gypsum variety we all know as Selenite is actually correctly called ‘Satin Spar’.

Gypsum is formed as an evaporative mineral, frequently found in alkaline clay beds, evaporated seas and caves. It often occurs with other minerals such as copper ores, sulfides, silver, iron ores, calcite, dolomite and opal.

When gypsum dehydrates severely, Anhydrite is formed. Interestingly, the process can reverse if the Anhydrite is reintroduced to water in its environment!  Some clear Selenite and Satin Spar Selenite specimens exhibit fluorescence or phosphorescence. Gypsum occurs on every continent and is the most common of all the sulfate minerals.
