GEOLOGICAL
Dioptase is a translucent to transparent emerald green crystal. Named in 1797 by Hauy from the Greek for “through” and “to see”, referring to the mineral’s two cleavage directions visible inside unbroken crystals. Dioptase occurs in the oxidized zone of copper deposits. When heated, Dioptase generates an electric charge (called pyroelectric).
A hydrous copper silicate, it forms micro-crystals usually less than 75mm in size. While not rare, good crystalline specimens are highly collectable. Dioptase was used in Pre-Pottery Neolithic statues dating back to 7200BC!
Malachite is a green copper carbonate hydroxide mineral. It was one of the first ores used to produce copper metal, and was cited as early as 79CE by Pliny the Elder, who referred to the mineral as ‘Molochitus’. In 1661 the spelling was revised to ‘Malachite’ as it is known today.
Collectable specimens of Malachite have various categories and characteristics, including colour, chatoyancy and habit. Botryoidal material is the most commonly available formation, while silky/fibrous is far harder to get hold of, and lastly Stalactite/Stalagmite specimens are the most rare and collectable.
