Fantastic characteristic forest green colour and good lustre. Very nice big individual crystals! This Dioptase comes from a small pocket discovered in 2024, offering a rare limited supply of small (and thus comparatively affordable) crystalline Dioptase specimens to collectors. From Likasi, Congo. Good Grade. Size approx 2.5cm. Weight approx 4g.

 

GEOLOGICAL

Dioptase is a translucent to transparent emerald green crystal. Named in 1797 by Hauy from the Greek for “through” and “to see”, referring to the mineral’s two cleavage directions visible inside unbroken crystals. Dioptase occurs in the oxidized zone of copper deposits. When heated, Dioptase generates an electric charge (called pyroelectric).

A hydrous copper silicate, it forms micro-crystals usually less than 75mm in size. While not rare, good crystalline specimens are highly collectable. Dioptase was used in Pre-Pottery Neolithic statues dating back to 7200BC!
