Description
Drusy Coated Chrysocolla Small Specimen (Group 11-20)
Beautiful specimens with a thin layer of Chrysocolla sitting on top of a basal matrix, variably associated with Malachite (some beautifully crystalline) and beautiful frondy Psilomelane aka Manganese Oxide dendrites!
Specimens generally have a fairly thin banding of crystalline material on a more substantial matrix. Some specimens have lovely dendritic patterns and features. These specimens fall under the “Kolwesite” banner but have a clearly predominant mineral and so are labelled as such.
Excellent and exciting material! The colour is a stunning turquoise. From Kakanda, Congo. Good to A Grade. Small size. Choose your individual crystal.
GEOLOGICAL
Chrysocolla has a cyan (blue-green) colour. It is a hydrous copper silicate that’s usually found with Malachite and Azurite. A secondary mineral, Chrysocolla forms in the oxidation zones of copper ore bodies. It’s the copper that gives this mineral its beautiful turquoise colour. Chrysocolla was first mentioned in 315 BC by Theophrastus, Greek Peripatetic philosopher and pupil of Aristotle.

Psilomelane is a group name for black manganese oxides including Hollandite (in Star Quartz) and Romanechite. It takes its name from the Greek ‘psilos’, meaning smooth, and ‘melas’, meaning black. Psilomelane consists of hydrous Manganese Oxide with variable amounts of barium and potassium.
A Dendrite (‘dendritic’) describes a mineral that forms in a branching moss- or fern-like pattern. Some native Silver & Gold forms like this. The term also applies to the appearance of these patterns (usually black) across a surface. Often misidentified as fossilized plant material, the organic fronds are usually due to crystallized Manganese Oxide.
