GEOLOGICAL

Cerussite is a lead carbonate mineral and is an important ore of lead. It belongs in the Aragonite family. The name is from the Latin cerussa, meaning white lead. Cerussite is often found in the oxidized zone of lead ore deposits and is often a weathering product of Galena (itself a lead ore mineral).

Cerussite grows in often stunning crystal arrangements. Typically tabular or prismatic, you also find intergrown twinned shapes like hearts, complex ‘snowflake’ clusters and more. The best gem-quality Cerussite comes from Tsnumeb, Namibia.

Cerussites may fluoresce pale blue or green in shortwave ultraviolet light (UV) and pinkish orange or yellow shades in longwave UV.

While it may be as beautiful as a diamond when faceted (having an even higher dispersion than a diamond), its softness makes it very tricky to cut and risky to wear. Consequently, it is one of the rarest gems in the jewellery industry.
