Small combo mineral specimen on matrix. Blocky, creamy tan-coloured Olmiite (possibly Poldervaartite variety) in association with snow white, acicular Bultfonteinite sprays on one side. From N`Chwaning II, Northern Cape, South Africa. Size approx 4cm. Weight approx 24g.

BULTFONTEINITE

Bultfonteinite is a fluorine-bearing hydrous calcium silicate. Bultfonteinite gets its name after the Bultfontein mine in Kimberley where it was first discovered in 1903. It’s generally white to pastel pink and can also be transparent. You’ll usually see it in a radiating formation of prismatic acicular crystals. But can also form in small radial spheres.

 

OLMIITE

Olmiite, a calcium-manganese silicate, is a rare and relatively newly discovered (2006) mineral only found in one area – the Kalahari Manganese Field of South Africa. Its colour can range from light tan to dark pink. It can be found in a range of habits, including radiating spheres, botryoidal, acicular and (least commonly) pyramidal, among others. Olmiite’s unusual name (with two ‘ii’s) is from Filippo Olmi, who first identified the mineral.
