GEOLOGICAL

Bismuth occurs as a native metal (notably in Australia, Bolivia and China), and in ores. However the majority of commercially available Bismuth is created in labs. It was discovered by an unknown alchemist around 1400 AD and was used as an alloying metal in South American Incan bronze around 1500 AD.

The beautiful iridescent colours on these specimens are produced by interference of light within the oxide film on its surface. The spiral, stair-stepped structure of Bismuth crystals is the result of a higher growth rate around the outside than on the inside edges.
