Rare leaf shaped / bladed crystals in matrix. Specimens come up in very small and very infrequent batches! A classic for collectors. From Tenke Fungurume, Congo. Very Good to A Grade. Weight approx 175g. Size approx 7cm.

GEOLOGICAL

Baryte was named in 1800 from the Greek word ‘barys’ which means ‘heavy’. This name is in response to baryte’s high specific gravity of 4.5, which is exceptional for a non-metallic mineral. Although frequently spelt barite (mostly US), the official IMA spelling is baryte. It is usually a clear to white colour, but different trace minerals can tint it a variety of hues.

Typically found as thick to thin tabular crystals, usually in clusters with the crystals growing parallel to one another, or nearly so. Also as bladed, white masses (desert roses). The baryte group consists of Baryte, Celestine, Anglesite, and Anhydrite. Baryte is the primary source of naturally occurring Barium.
