Lovely little multi specimen consisting of bright white Orthoclase, rods of dark green to black Aegirine and yellow Zircon. From Zomba, Malawi. Good to A Grade. Weight approx 28g. Size approx 5cm.

 

GEOLOGICAL

Aegirine is a dark green to black inosilicate mineral and part of the Pyroxene group. It can be found as long slender prismatic crystals, in radiating acicular sprays, fibrous, and in radial concretions. Norwegian mineralogist Hans Esmark named Aegirine in 1835 after Ægir, the Norse god of the sea.

 

Orthoclase is a Potassium Aluminium Silicate and a variety of Feldspar. It often forms short prismatic and tabular crystals with a high percentage of twinning and occasional striations. It can also be found in massive and granular forms. Colours range from clear to white, sometimes with green, pink or yellow dusky pastel tinges.

 

Zircon is a transparent to opaque zirconium silicate mineral occurring in a wide range of colours. It has been mined from stream gravels for over 2000 years. Non gemmy Zircon serves as the primary ore of zirconium metal, used in alloys that require heat & corrosion resistance. It’s name is derived from the Persian zargun, meaning “gold-hued”. Large Zircon crystals are rare. Their average size in granite rocks is 0.1-0.3mm.
